In an recent interview with the New York Times, Reznor talked about his approach for the band’s upcoming festival dates, which include Chicago’s Lollapalooza and San Francisco’s Outside Lands, saying that he was inspired by Talking Heads’ 1983 tour, famously documented in the concert film, Stop Making Sense. He explained that for these festival gigs, he will start out onstage alone before the band gradually appears around him.

Reznor also spoke about their upcoming North American arena tour, which kicks off in St. Paul, MN on September 28, explaining that the band will ditch the current stage set-up they’re using for the festival shows and construct something completely different. Something Reznor admitted was a little crazy.
“The fact that we’re doing all this only for these few shows, and then we have to do it over again, throwing all this out to do a completely new thing, with new things that won’t work,” he said. “That feels a little insane.”
